It's no wonder that many a person in our society is beguiled into believing in falsehood after having had an oddball experience which, in such persons' view, is something cabbalistic and is not even feasible to be understood via scientific knowledge.
One of the important factors that trick people into blindly embracing such unreasoned thoughts is coincidence. Like fear, coincidence has been a source of superstitious beliefs for centuries. Enticingly captivating and persuading, coincidence has always intrigued man, and it has remained a matter of interest since ancient times.
More often than not, coincidence takes our fancy the same way symmetry does. I would call coincidence rather a "symmetry of events". Symmetry comes into play when an appropriate proportion and similarity are conspicuous in different objects, which is indeed the base of the visual beauty that humans perceive. Coincidence is the occurrence of two similar events together, often having potential for evoking immense amount of wonder in everyone who comes over such a situation. It's very simple to sort out something you think is bizarre or mysterious, especially if you have some basic knowledge of a few logical fallacies, cognitive biases and school-level science.
Before I say anything about how to unravel the reason behind an incident that seems baffling and inexplicable to you, I am responsible to tell you how you can be acquainted with the rationale of science because knowing the basic concepts of science would help you to fathom out anything that bemuses you. Contarary to the popular belief, the method and rationale of science are not so intricate to understand even though scientific discourse at the academic level is esoteric to the public. It's time that the academic community took an initiative to make accessible to the public at least the basic scientific knowledge and method that are crucial for any modern society for its healthy existence and survival.
Getting back to the topic, humans always hold a tendency to 'detect' what they already know, in anything they come across by fitting everything new into the patterns that already exist in their mind, which accounts for how people find human images in the clouds, flowers, and anywhere in nature, a psychological phenomenon known as 'pattern seeking' in general and 'pareidolia' in psychology. Coincidence is but a simple, possible pair of events co-occurring, which will be no more of a miracle if you reflect on it logically. Innumerous number of incidents are occurring in every second, and as there are many events of the same nature, it's very much likely that two events of the same nature occur in tandem with each other. I will drive the point home with a simple example: suppose 10 persons are picking up one ball each from a box in which many balls of different colours are kept; I am damn sure that at some point in time, some of the persons will end up choosing the same-coloured balls. That possibility of coincidence remains in everything we do. We often get surprised as we see one of our friends wear the same-coloured dress like the one we have. That surprise may turn a strong belief if the same thing happens in any other instance that you would find rather emotional.
Then, how can you make sure a couple of events occurring together is just coincidence? One of the few things you can do is to check their repeatability. You have to check whether you fetch up in troubles all the days you wear that particular shirt which you think brings you bad luck. You have to check if that black cat brings you misfortune all the days you see it. The answer then will be, I'm sure, a big 'no'. And now you can conclude that your belief is illogical, and everything comes from your mind itself. This is how you can draw a logical conclusion by following one of the elements of scientific method called 'repeatability' .
It's time you bucked the trend of yielding up to a popular belief without a second thought. When you pass over such a rethink, you are really shutting the doors on reason and missing a chance for logic to dawn on you, thereby losing an opportunity to bring to light a popular falsehood that's likely to be passed on through generations, which would be detrimental enough to put the lives of many in peril.
